Coming of Age
A Program for Youth And Their Families
Coming of Age (COA) supports youth ages 12-15 as they grow into “Practicing Young Adults.” This Rites of Passage program was created as an initiation into adulthood.
COA is a place where youth develop the skills, capacities, and gifts to live an extraordinary and fulfilling life. Each youth has a personal Spiritual Companion who walks as a sacred witness to the youth’s journey of awakening. All COA participants; youth, parents, and Spiritual Companions, grow in confidence and self-awareness through a series of experiences designed to enhance their relationship with the “still small voice within.”
Activities
In this program, we pair each youth with a dedicated Spiritual Companion. This person is an adult who walks with them through the program—listening, witnessing, and being present with them. Most Coming of Age events take place on Saturdays, with three overnight events. Activities include rituals, stories, games, inspiration, and practice using prayer. Equally important, the program incorporates other spiritual tools, time outdoors, and FUN, SILLINESS, and GIGGLES. Coming of Age begins with a kick-off event in November and runs from January through June. To participate, youth and their family must commit to attending all the scheduled events in the program.
Parents’ Circle
Are you a parent or guardian seeking support through the “growing up” phase of your child’s life? Through participation in our Parents’ Circle, parents and adults with parenting roles can learn more about the developmental process their child or youth is going through, as well as spiritual support for the family in adjusting to changes that their child or youth might be experiencing.
Spiritual Companions
Adult volunteers, who report that they enjoy each program every bit as much as the children or youth, participate with young people in all events. Because memories of childhood or child-rearing often emerge during this program, we offer a Spiritual Companions’ Circle, in which they can receive support in working with or through any memories that emerge.
